Adding a folder to Sparkle

Open Sparkle from the menu bar, go to Home and click the “+ Add Folder” button to add any folder you want Sparkle to manage. Once you add it, Sparkle takes care of the rest. Sparkle can manage your Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders or any custom folder you choose. You decide which folders you want to add to Sparkle. It also works with cloud storage folders from Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, and OneDrive.

How Sparkle organizes your files

When you add a folder, Sparkle creates three sections inside it:

  • Manual Library: Your personal space. If you already had folders set up, Sparkle moves them here and won't touch them. Anything in the Manual Library stays exactly where you put it.

  • Recents: New files land here first. They stay in Recents for 3 days before being sorted into the AI Library. You can change this timing in Settings.

  • AI Library: This is where Sparkle does its thing. It looks at your file names and types, then builds a folder structure that actually makes sense: images go to Images, videos go to Videos, and so on.

Keeping files out of the AI Library

Want something to stay at the top level? Just drag it out of the AI Library. Sparkle remembers your choice and won't move it again.

If you want to stop Sparkle to organise certain files, just move the file or folder to the Manual Library, and Sparkle will leave it alone. The Manual Library is your space, Sparkle never touches it.

You can also create custom folders inside the AI Library or Manual Library anytime. Sparkle respects your folder structure and organizes around it.

Sparkle is designed to keep your apps working properly. If an app stores data in a specific folder, Sparkle moves it to the Manual Library on the first organization, this prevents it from being reorganized in the future. If you move that folder back to its original location, Sparkle remembers your choice and won't touch it again. You stay organized without breaking anything.

Tracking what Sparkle moves

Every file that gets moved is logged. You can see exactly what went where, and click any log entry to open that file directly in Finder. No surprises, you always know what Sparkle did.

Sparkle moves files, never deletes them. If duplicates are found, Sparkle flags them separately and lets you decide what to keep or remove. You're always in control.

Pausing or reverting changes

Need to undo something? Open Sparkle from the menu bar and go to Home. Choose any folder and from there you can:

  • Pause organization: Temporarily stop Sparkle from organizing new files

  • Revert changes: Undo what Sparkle has done and restore your files to their previous locations

You can also manually drag files and folders from the AI Library and Manual Library back into the main folder, it only takes about 30 seconds.

If you want to stop using Sparkle entirely, move your files back and then uninstall the app.

Will sparkle slow down my mac?

No, Sparkle runs efficiently in the background and is designed to use minimal system resources. You shouldn't notice any performance impact during normal use.
