Why don't I see my Cora categories in Gmail?

When you create a new category in Cora, you might notice it does not always show up as a label in your Gmail sidebar. Here is how it works.

When does a Gmail label appear?

Cora only creates a Gmail label for a category when it archives an email into it. Archiving moves the email out of your inbox and files it under that label in Gmail.

Whether archiving happens depends on the action you assigned to the category:

  • Brief action - Cora archives the email and includes it in your brief. The Gmail label appears after the first email in that category is archived.

  • Draft action - Cora drafts a response but keeps the email in your inbox. No archiving happens, so the Gmail label is not created.

  • Keep in Inbox action - Cora intentionally keeps the email in your inbox. Because nothing is archived, no Gmail label is created. This is by design - if the email is staying in your inbox, there is nothing to file under a label.

Keep in Inbox categories and Gmail labels

If you set up a category with the Keep in Inbox action, you will not see a corresponding label in your Gmail sidebar. That is expected. The category is working - Cora is identifying and tracking those emails - but since they stay in your inbox, no Gmail label is applied. The label would not point to anything.

If you want a Gmail label to appear for a group of emails, consider using the Brief action for that category instead. Cora will archive those emails into a brief and apply the label in Gmail.

Draft action categories

For categories using the Draft action, Cora drafts responses but keeps emails in your inbox. Gmail labels are not created for these categories currently. If you expect to see a label for a Draft category, reach out to us and we can look into the best way to handle it for your setup.
